Community Boards to determine suitable areas for legal self-contained freedom camping.

The Thames-Coromandel District Council (TCDC) has asked Council staff to begin discussions with the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA) about potentially leasing and managing freedom camping sites (in self contained vehicles only) to ensure that any legal freedom camping is managed and enforced effectively.

If a satisfactory agreement can be reached with the NZMCA, Community Boards will be tasked with investigating suitable areas for controlled and legal freedom camping.

The Council also asked staff to review existing communications and signage to ensure visitors to the Coromandel observe the ban on freedom camping.

Freedom camping on any Council owned park or reserve is, and will continue to be, illegal.
