BAY OF PLENTY

As part of its long-term sustainable retail plan, Bayfair Shopping Centre is taking part in one of the world’s largest climate change initiatives – Earth Hour 2011.

Bayfair is celebrating the annual event by presenting an initiative which will not only provide inspiration to visitors but also give insight into how the centre is helping to preserve the local environment.

From Monday 21 March to Wednesday 23 March, Bayfair will host ‘behind-the-scenes’ tours of the centre, sharing information about how they conserve energy, manage waste and assist in reducing their carbon footprint all year round. The Sustainable Seminars for Sixty, representing the 60 minutes which make up the global Earth Hour event, will be scheduled at 11am and 2pm daily.

Bayfair operations manager Steve Ellingford says the Sustainable Seminars for Sixty are a perfect opportunity to open Bayfair’s doors and show people how the centre goes about employing sustainable practices. “Many of these measures can be employed in the home, and we have some great tips on changing small things to make a big difference. We have an outstanding commitment from our retailers and are proud to share some of the results we have achieved by working together for the good of the environment.”

To maximise the experience for attendees, each tour is limited to 10 people and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Tours are open to the public and those wishing to attend can register their interest by emailing nina.rivett@ampcapital.com or calling (07) 928 3444.

This activity is seen as a prelude to the globally-recognized Earth Hour taking place on Saturday 26 March, when people in cities across the world will unite in switching off lights for an hour to ‘vote Earth’. In New Zealand, Earth Hour will take place from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.
