Waikato rivers are coping well with the heavy rain in parts of the region over the past 24 hours.

Duty emergency management officer Greg Ryan said this morning that while plenty of rain had come down it had not caused widespread problems with river flooding.

“There has been surface ponding of rain water around the region generally, with some drains struggling to cope with the amount of rain.

“However, rivers are coping well with the downpours that have occurred.

“Our staff are currently out checking that flood protection infrastructure is helping to drain the surface flooding where it has occurred.

“We will continue to keep a close eye on the situation as the week progresses given that more rain is forecast.”
