The Queenstown Lakes District Council is requiring a contractor to revisit a section of the Gorge Road upgrade, at the contractor’s cost, QLDC project manager Steve Hewland said.

“A 290m area has been identified as contrary to the contract specification and as such, is unacceptable,” Mr Hewland said.

The ‘rough’ area has been identified as being between Wakatipu High School pedestrian crossing and Bowen Street.

“As you drive that section, in either direction, vehicles experience a poor ride quality and quality checking on the part of the Council is undertaken before any contractual sign off,” he said.

In this case the standards specified in the contract had not been met and had to be remedied at the contractor’s cost.

The work, which would involve removing the asphalt and laying a new seal would be carried out by the contractor (Downer EDI) from Wednesday through to Friday, this week.

“We are sorry that there will be additional inconvenience for motorists and Gorge Road retailers and residents but will work with the contractor to keep the disruption to a minimum,” Mr Hewland said.
