WELLINGTON CITY

Wellington is buzzing with anticipation this week as a high-powered group of some of its most talented performers prepares to storm the stage with the city’s premiere production of RENT. Fifteen years since Jonathan Larson’s masterpiece first changed the face of theatre, Wellington will finally get to experience this special piece of Broadway history.

Set in the slums of New York, RENT is a powerful rock musical based on Puccini’s La Boheme, telling the story of eight struggling young artists trying to find their way in through life’s challenges.

As its director, Speakeasy Theatre Limited’s Stuart James, puts it, “The music is poetically beautiful and exquisitely written. Created for and by, and performed by young artists who can directly identify with its style and story, RENT is a true testament to an exciting 'new wave' of musical theatre."

Stuart and his team are particularly inspired by this younger target audience. “We want to make the show accessible to as many young people as possible,” he says. “To achieve this we are offering $20 front row tickets to anyone who turns up at the theatre and registers their names any time before the show on the day. First in first served. That’s half price!”

Don’t miss this rare chance to see one of Broadway’s greatest smash hits. RENT is happening now, at Lower Hutt Little Theatre, 19 – 30 May. To learn more about the production or book tickets, visit www.rentwellington2011.co.nz.
