WELLINGTON CITY

The team which established the best beer venue in New Zealand will open a new state of the art brewery bar in Wellington’s Bond Street this spring.

A group of investors, headed by Malthouse directors Sean Murrie and Colin Mallon, have secured the upstairs premises at 14 Bond Street. Work is already underway to transform it into a top-class hospitality destination, with a particular emphasis on quality beer brewed on site. The site previously housed enterprises such as Syn, the Loaded Hog and the Ruby Lounge.

Fresh craft beer will be brewed on the premises in a modern, compact 1,000-litre micro-brewery. There will be around a further 40 different beers on tap at any given time, highlighting the best of beer from around New Zealand and around the world.

“This is a tremendously exciting opportunity to create a ground-breaking new venue for Wellington. The Bond Street site is large and offers us the ability to brew a selection of craft beers, pour the largest tap range in the country and serve top-notch food, all in one place. Our designers have been extremely busy and, as a team, we already have a very clear idea of what our yet-to-be-named bar will look and feel like,” said Sean Murrie.

“Wellington customers are incredibly supportive of craft beer and we want to take things to the next level. The on-site brewery will allow us to create a range of collaborative and speciality brews with Tuatara Brewery along with like-minded visiting brewers. It is a hugely exhilarating opportunity to bring brewing back to the heart of New Zealand’s Craft Beer Capital” Colin Mallon said.

Malthouse was named Best New Zealand Beer Venue 2010 by Beer and Brewer magazine.
