NORTH SHORE CITY

A 48 year old male is in police custody after he was removed from a house in Birkdale Avenue on the North Shore today.

Police went to the address at 10.15am Wednesday 18 May 2011 to locate the man who was wanted on a warrant to arrest.

On arrival police discovered there were five other occupants at the property. Two were arrested for breach of bail. The other three individuals were released without charge.

The wanted man who was well known to police refused to come out. He barricaded himself in the ceiling of the house. A cordon was established in the residential area. Three homes were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

The Armed Offenders Squad was called and after more than an hour of negotiation CS gas was inserted into the house. AOS members then entered the property and located the man in the ceiling cavity.

The incident ended at about 1.50pm

Police say that at no time was there any risk to the public. No firearms were used and there were no injuries in the action.

The man will appear in the North Shore District Court tomorrow on a charge of failing to appear. He is wanted to interview on other serious matters and police say they have not ruled out some serious charges being laid.
