Water users in the Paihia, Waitangi, Haruru Falls and Opua areas are being asked to conserve water as an emergency measure while repairs are carried out to the treatment plant at Haruru Falls.

The unscheduled repairs follow heavy rain last week with high levels of siltation in the Waitangi River. The muddy condition of the river has caused the treatment plant filtration and clarifier systems to malfunction.

Water and Wastewater Operations Manager James Brooks said today the treatment plant was still working but only at a fraction of its normal capacity.

"Current use is exceeding the plants ability to produce clear water, and we would urge consumers to conserve water until the plant is back to its full operating capacity.

"If water use is not voluntarily reduced, we could be in a position in which compulsory restrictions will have to be imposed until the plant is fully operational again," he said.

As an interim measure the filling station for bulk water tankers has been closed.
