The University of Auckland has been placed in the top 50 in the world in six Arts and Humanities subjects.

In subject rankings released by QS World University Rankings®, Auckland was 23rd in Modern Languages, 30th in Geography and Area Studies, 31st in Linguistics, 33rd in History, 42nd in English language and literature, and 43rd in Philosophy.

No other New Zealand universities were ranked at 50 or above in these subjects. Auckland was also the best performing New Zealand university in the QS rankings for engineering, science, technology and medical subjects released earlier in the year.

QS ranks universities worldwide based on academic reputation, employer reputation and research citations, with weightings tailored to each subject.

The Dean of Arts, Associate Professor Jan Crosthwaite, says that the rankings are a welcome recognition of the quality of research and teaching in these disciplines. “It is a great pleasure to have this acknowledgement of the excellent work of our colleagues, particularly in modern languages, and to have such high international rankings for Arts and Humanities areas of the University.”
