Submissions Open on Management of Abel Tasman Foreshore

The public is invited to make submissions on the Abel Tasman Foreshore Scenic Reserve Draft Management Plan that contains proposals for management of the foreshore along the Abel Tasman coastline.

The 774-hectare Abel Tasman Foreshore Scenic Reserve encompasses foreshore adjoining the national park, national park islands, Council reserves and private land enclaves between Marahau and Wainui. It is jointly administered by Tasman District Council and the Department of Conservation.

The public have until Monday 8 August to make submissions on the draft management plan for the foreshore reserve. The new plan, when finalised, will guide and direct the reserve administration committee’s management of the foreshore.

Key aspects of the draft management plan include:

Separating out high use access points from beaches where people can expect less noise and a more natural setting.
Concentrating commercial activities at six “coastal access points”: Anchorage, Bark Bay, Onetahuti, Totaranui, Torrent Bay, and Awaroa.
Limits of the level of commercial water transport activity.
No commercial water-based activity north of Totaranui.
Consideration of private landowner's traditional use of the foreshore.

Following the closure of public submissions, any submitters wishing to speak to their submissions will be able to do so at public hearings before a special committee set up to approve the plan. Revisions may then be made to the plan as a result of submissions
