WELLINGTON CITY

A taste of life as a VIP on the balcony of a hotel penthouse, creating your own cocktail at Motel, and touring behind the scenes at a coffee roastery, an iconic theatre and a synagogue are just some of the activities available to Wellington’s residents as part of Wellington Open Day next Sunday June 26.

The event, which will see almost 30 of the city’s visitor attractions open their doors for a gold coin charity donation on Sunday June 26, is being organised by Positively Wellington Tourism in a bid to familiarise Wellingtonians with the city’s visitor attractions ahead of Rugby World Cup 2011.

“This is our industry’s chance to both educate locals on what’s on offer and thank them for the role they play in hosting the city’s millions of visitors every year. So often visitors seek a locals’ perspective, where Wellington Open Day will give locals a visitors’ view,” says PWT Chief Executive David Perks.

Wellingtonians’ absolutely positive attitude and welcoming nature is itself one of the city’s key attractions, earning itself recognition within Lonely Planet Best in Travel’s 2011 chapter about the ‘coolest little capital in the world’. The initiative has been received by residents in typically positive fashion - in less than 24 hours of sending details to the KNOW Wellington database, Seal Coast Safaris’ tours had sold out and to date almost 500 locals have RSVPd to attend Wellington Open Day on facebook.

Attractions such as ZEALANDIA: The Karori Sanctuary Experience, Carter Observatory and Wellington Zoo will be among those open for a gold coin donation, with the CitySights bus and John’s Hop On Hop Off City Tour both operating for a gold coin fee. All funds go to the relevant attractions’ charity of choice.

Almost 30 attractions and hotels are open from 10am-5pm on Sunday June 26, with many running special tours or value-adds for Wellington Open Day 2011. Full details on what’s on offer at WellingtonNZ.com.
