Palmerston North City Council has started work on a new pavilion at Skoglund Park. The pavilion will replace the existing one which was built in the 1970’s.

The new pavilion will provide changing rooms and showers for sports teams using the park and disability accessible toilets.

The existing pavilion is located at the entrance to Skoglund Park and causes congestion with vehicles during events at the Park. The width of the road is also inadequate for buses using the car park to access Freyberg High School or sports grounds.

“Changing the location from where the existing pavilion is to where the new pavilion is sited will open up the entrance to the park giving better sight lines and will also increase the size of the existing car park,” Jos Broderick Senior Property Assets Officer said.

“The old pavilion will be replaced with a more modern building and be built using better building practices.”

The car park is also popular with people using the Freyberg Pool complex, Vautier Park and Edwards Pit Park.

The new pavilion will be sited behind the existing one on the grassed area. Once work has been completed the old one will be demolished and the car park will be re-marked.

Weather permitting work is due for completion in November 2011.
