Ouse Street between Thames Street & Reed Street has been under road work upgrades for the past several months, with water mains and sewerage works. Whilst in the process of the roadwork, suggestions have come into the Council from the community on improving road safety.

There have been suggestions since at least as far back as 1974 on the closure of the road for the safety of Ouse Street pedestrians, enhancing the area and road safety improvements for the intersection of Ouse Street and Derwent Street. The Council therefore, wish to consult with the community on the proposed changes:

· Closing off Ouse Street, with two thirds of the road to be made into parking and Waitaki Girls School access, with the remaining third of the road to be improved with landscaped area, courtyard and a pedestrianised precinct for the local area.

Roading Asset Manager, Geoff Young explained. "Council continually looks for ways to improve road user and pedestrian safety. We believe the proposed changes to Ouse Street can help deliver these improvements. We are conscious about getting the feedback from schools, businesses and residents however before we make a final decision. We would therefore encourage as many people as possible to take part in the consultation".

You can let us know your views on the proposal by email: consult@waitaki.govt.nz, by post to Waitaki District Council Private Bag 50058, Oamaru 9444, or join us on Facebook /Twitter (search for Waitaki DC). Closing dates for submission is Friday 29th July. We aim to present the proposal to council on August 23rd.
