A New Zealand Symphony Orchestra ensemble will play one of the most famous melodies of all time in a tour of Canterbury and Otago next month.

The Back to Bach tour of Ashburton, Timaru, Oamaru and Dunedin in August includes Johann Sebastian Bach’s widely-loved Air on the G-String, featuring players from the NZSO string section and a harpsichord.

The ensemble will also perform other jewels of the Baroque era, including works by Telemann and Rameau and Bach’s Oboe Concerto in D Minor featuring soloist Robert Orr, the NZSO Principal Oboe.

Bach was the greatest composer of the Baroque age, with his brilliant mastery of harmony and counterpoint. Full of ornamental beauty and filigree detail, his work brought Baroque music to its zenith. His death was the end of an era.

Back to Bach is proudly supported by National Bank Private Banking and Ryman Healthcare Ltd. It is the latest in the popular concert series NZSO Soloists, stripping back the full orchestra to allow players from selected sections to shine.

NZSO Soloists concerts are an intimate musical experience, revealing the world-class abilities of individual NZSO musicians.
