Warner Bros. Pictures’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, the final adventure of the film series based on the beloved books by J.K. Rowling, shattered box office records in New Zealand, earning $973,285 in its opening day, making this the highest grossing opening day of all time.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 opened on approximately 149 screens, with fans lining up for hours to be among the first to see the film. The opening day gross eclipsed the previous record of $919,000, set by Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King. The film also broke existing records for the highest grossing Thursday of all time, biggest ever opening for any Harry Potter film in the franchise and biggest midnight session result of all time for the New Zealand market.
Hayley Botes, Marketing Manager for Roadshow Films New Zealand stated, “After a decade of Harry Potter films, the final film is truly a cultural event, and we’re thrilled to see this powerful response from such a broad range of moviegoers. These incredible results are a testament to the incredible achievement of the filmmakers, cast, and, of course, J.K. Rowling, and should ensure the film series’ place in history for years to come.”
The Harry Potter film series had already achieved the distinction of being the top-grossing film franchise of all time, a milestone it reached with the combined success of the first five films.
