Pak n Save Wairau Road North Shore - Armed man arrested

A 37 year old man armed with a loaded shotgun has been arrested in Auckland, by members of the Police's Armed Offenders Squad.

At about 10.20pm last night, Police were called to the Pak n Save supermarket in Wairau Road, North Shore, when a security guard was alerted to a male who had been seen with a firearm in the Pak n Save car park.

The man appeared to be in an agitated state, and was talking to a female acquaintance who was standing near him.

Armed police surrounded the car park, and subsequently negotiated with the man to surrender himself to police. This process took a number of hours, and it was not until about 2.00am that the man was taken safely into custody.

No shots were fired, and neither the woman, who had remained near the male throughout the incident, nor anyone else, was injured.

Enquiries are continuing, and will determine what charges the man will face, and what the background to the incident was.
