Sport Tararua District Co-ordinator Pip Hubbard is laying down the gauntlet.

In the name of some healthy competition she is inviting businesses keen to improve their fitness levels to form a team and challenge other businesses throughout the Manawatu in a month long ‘Workplace Hikoi.’

The challenge is part of National Push Play month which begins October 1 and finishes with Push Play Day on November 2.

During the month teams will make their way round a virtual map of the Tararua District and undertake to do a minimum of 30 minutes a day of physical activity in line with the Push Play message.

Participants will be supplied with information about walking as well as a tool kit to get started. Spot prizes will be handed out along the way.

This Workplace Challenge is being run throughout the Manawatu region and is putting the spotlight on businesses – including in Tararua – to get out and enjoy some healthy competition.

Ms Hubbard said the challenge was an opportunity for businesses to support a worthwhile initiative and to advocate active living to their employees.

“This is an ideal activity, not only is it a great way to get your workplace active, it is also a fantastic way to learn just what the district you live in has to offer!” she said.

For the past six weeks she has been inviting businesses to participate either by enrolling for the challenge or signing up for sponsorship support.

The results have been amazing, the District has really supported the Challenge. Up to 10 businesses are registered for the challenge and local businesses such as The Warehouse, Go 4 Wheels, Graelyn lavender Farm and Purple Fish Accommodation, have shown their support by providing prizes.

Push Play month is all part of a vision to raise awareness of the benefits of physical activity and to make New Zealand the world’s most active nation.
