The state funeral of Sir Paul Reeves is being covered live and uninterrupted by Maori Television from the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell on Thursday 18 August.

Coverage begins at 10am with the funeral procession arriving at the cathedral at 10.30am from the public tangihanga at Tātai Hono, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Newton.

Television coverage is mostly in English and concludes at 12 noon. It will be hosted by Maori Television anchor Julian Wilcox and Archdeacon Dr Hone Kaa, an Anglican priest and long-time friend of Sir Paul. Archdeacon Kaa is also host of Maori Television’s Te Teepu programme.

The funeral will also be streamed live to a global audience online at www.maoritelevision.com.

Maori Television CEO Jim Mather says the network is proud to celebrate the life of a great statesman and Maori leader.

“It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Sir Paul Reeves. Our condolences also go out to the Reeves whanau at this time of great sorrow.

“As our nation’s first Maori Governor-General and a leader committed to Maori development, we will commemorate Sir Paul’s life and his many achievements this week on Maori Television.”

The network will screen a range of special programming activities this week, including coverage of the state funeral on Thursday morning, daily extended news coverage on Te Kaea, and a special screening of Ta Paora, the documentary on the life of Sir Paul made by his daughter Jane Reeves for Maori Television.

Ta Paora will screen at midday on Thursday, immediately after coverage of the state funeral. It will be followed at 1pm with a two-hour special of The Great Land Debate from Waitangi Day 2009 where Sir Paul was a judge, along with Gisborne Mayor Meng Foon and broadcaster Paul Holmes.

A former Governor General of New Zealand and Primate and Archbishop of New Zealand, Sir Paul died at the weekend aged 78.
