CANTERBURY

Around 300 volunteers are expected to get to work around Christchurch on the weekend of the 10th and 11th of September.

rebuildchristchurch.co.nz, in association with the Student Volunteer Army and CanCERN, are thrilled with the response to the call for volunteers, who will complete work around the city that may have been started but is not yet complete.

rebuildchristchurch.co.nz spokesperson, Wendy Davie, says the weekend is ideal, for example, for elderly residents who may be reluctant to ask for help.

“We know of people who still have silt on their properties or can’t access a garage because of debris blocking the entranceway. Helping them to move on and get these jobs done is the aim of the weekend,” she says.

Sam Johnson of the Student Volunteer Army says mini vans of students will be sent to people requesting help, including those in red zone areas who are moving out of their homes.

“Packing up a house is a daunting prospect for many and we are sure we can be of help,” he says.
Both volunteers and residents needing work completed, will be encouraged to register on the rebuildchristchurch.co.nz website (there is a specific page on the rebuildchristchurch.co.nz website for the “Let’s Get It Done” weekend) or email info@rebuildchristchurch.co.nz for more information.

Davie says working with the SVA and CanCERN has enabled rebuildchristchurch.co.nz to bring together both volunteers and those needing work done. Support from the Red Cross has also been gratefully accepted.

“We now have around 200 volunteers registered and are aiming for 300 in total with the majority of those coming from the Student Volunteer Army,” she says. The “Let’s Get It Done Weekend” aims to complete most of the work on the Saturday, with the Sunday acting as a “final tying up of loose ends” type of day.”

A headquarters will be established at the Wainoni Baptist Church, (which will operate from 8am until 5 on the Saturday and from 1pm until 5pm on the Sunday), with the 0800 337137 phone number operating, and there will be an experienced support team managing the HQ.
