Former All Blacks star Steve McDowall has finally set the record straight over the misspelling of his surname.

In his two Rugby World Cups - the first tournament in 1987, which New Zealand won, and in 1991 - he is in the books as 'McDowell'.

Throughout his playing career, publications, records and the media spelled his surname incorrectly. Even now, on the eve of Rugby World Cup 2011 in his homeland, he is still being referred to as 'McDowell'.

Surprisingly, the former prop, who is now providing Romania's forwards with the benefit of his expert knowledge as the team's technical coach, has never made a fuss.

Born in Rotorua, McDowall excelled for Auckland, who dominated the Ranfurly Shield in the 1980s and 1990s, and supplied the backbone for a formidable All Blacks team during the same period.
