District councillors visited the Picton Men’s Shed recently to take a look at the fully equipped community workshop where retired men can retreat to swap yarns and work together on community projects.

Picton councillor David Oddie says the men have done a great deal of good work for the Picton community.

The “Shed Men” have given their time to many projects including the refurbishment of a 27-foot clinker whaler belonging to the Picton Foreshore Trust. They have also made saw-horses, picnic tables, outdoor furniture and jewellery boxes. One member took on the job of repainting the Picton Rowing Club's oars. Others have made furniture for members of the public and a cupboard for the local quilters' group. They’ve helped the Picton Foreshore Trust dismantle and erect boat sheds and worked with the local Rotary Club repairing toys.

There’s also a gardening corner where men are growing and selling natives and vegetable seedlings.

REAP Community Education organiser Ailsa Carey says about 15 older men use the shed every week. She says the shed provides a “blokey” and good-humoured atmosphere where men feel productive, connected and useful.

The Council leases the land for the Shed and much of the equipment has been donated by the public and Shed members have become very adept at sourcing materials or recycling stuff for projects.

A suitable location is currently being sought to open a similar Men’s Shed in Blenheim.
