WELLINGTON

Wellington City Council would like your views on a draft arts and culture strategy for the city. Wellington is a creative city that is fortunate to be home to some of New Zealand's finest arts organisations and artists.

We have a reputation for being a passionate, inquisitive and tolerant city that welcomes and promotes participation, experimentation and collaboration in the arts.

Wellington could be doing more to make sure it remains a key centre for cultural activity. We have a number of strengths, but there are also some concerns:

  • Many Wellington-based arts and cultural organisations are struggling to attract funding and maintain service levels.
  • Key Wellington cultural events have not taken place or have been reduced in scale.
  • It is becoming increasingly difficult to develop and present creative works.

We need to respond to these challenges so Wellington remains a relevant and exciting place that people want to live in, yearn to visit or will recommend to others.
The draft Arts and Culture Strategy aims to:

  • build on the city's existing strengths and untapped opportunities to provide a focus for Council investment, asset management and staff
  • provide direction so we can work more effectively with others - communities, business, tertiary institutions, and the arts and cultural sector - to address the challenges before us
  • reinvigorate Wellington's arts and cultural offerings to residents and visitors.
