Whangärei Police are seeking witnesses to a hit and run incident that occurred in the city late yesterday afternoon.
About 5pm a group of four young women were crossing the road on First Avenue when a car, which had driven from the dead-end area of the street towards Central Avenue, hit a 13-year-old girl who was among the group.
The car, described as a red four-door vehicle and possibly at Toyota or Nissan, did not stop. It appeared to have three male Maori occupants, aged in their late teens or early twenties. It was also described as being dirty.
The teenage girl was taken to hospital with a possible broken ankle and dislocated kneecap.
Police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information relating to the car involved and its occupants.
