A post-mortem will be carried out in Auckland tomorrow (12 October) after the death of a man in Waikato Hospital today following a driving incident in Hamilton on Thursday.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Andy Bu Bear of the Hamilton CIB said it will be for the Coroner to determine the cause of death of 41-year-old Waikato University student, Warren DEANE.

"While the examination takes place our suspicious death enquiry will continue.

"Given the matter is currently before the courts we are not in a position to confirm how Mr DEANE suffered his fatal injuries other than to say some media reports that he was crushed by a car are incorrect."

Mr Bu Bear said relatives of Mr DEANE had flown to Hamilton from the United Kingdom and Victim Support had been assigned to assist the family through their ordeal.

"At this point in time I would like to offer the condolences of the Waikato Police to his family and assure them this matter is being dealt with in a thorough and professional manner."

A 62-year-old driver arrested on a charge of failing to stop or ascertain injury a short time after the incident will appear in the Hamilton District Court tomorrow.

Mr Bu Bear said further charges were likely.
