Collaboration between the three Southern Lakes RTOs (regional tourism organisations) of Lake Wanaka, Queenstown and Fiordland is preparing the region well for the tough economic times ahead was the message that came out of the recent Southern Lakes AGM.

Southern Lakes chairman, Dave Hawkey, said most indications were the next five years were going to be tough in the tourism industry and there was strength in numbers.

“There is real strength in working together as an effective IMA (International Marketing Alliance) in the long haul markets and as a group we feel well prepared to take on these challenges,” he said.

Mr Hawkey said an example of how effective Southern Lake was is the hosting of TRENZ for two consecutive years.

“Having TRENZ in the region is a huge opportunity and to secure it for a second year running consolidates what we achieved in 2011. The event attracts several hundred international buyers, media and other industry professionals who spend several days in the region, experiencing the landscapes and products first hand.”

Southern Lakes consists of representatives from Lake Wanaka Tourism, Destination Queenstown and Destination Fiordland and co-ordinates the marketing of the region to long haul markets, positioning Southern lakes as one of New Zealand’s most popular and diverse visitor destinations.
