Palmerston North City Council has received a summary of the results from the bi-annual Communitrak Survey on resident satisfaction.

The survey, carried out by National Research Bureau, gives the Council an idea of how residents view the services provided by Council by asking residents if they are satisfied with services provided and if they would like more, the same or less money spent on any services.

It also included some questions about wider life in Palmerston North. One of the most pleasing results show an increase in community spirit with 74% of those surveyed saying its ‘good or ‘very good’ compared with only 53% in 2007.

“It’s great to see people recognising our city is a fantastic place to live and I am particularly encouraged by the increased sense of community spirit,” Mayor Jono Naylor said.

The survey included questions on a number of services provided by the Council and included questions on sewerage, sports fields and play grounds, public libraries, roading and dog control.

Results showed that most people surveyed were satisfied with the way their rates were spent, with 76% surveyed either very satisfied or fairly satisfied. Satisfaction with both kerbside recycling and rubbish collection has increased from 70% to 89%, a positive sign the new wheelie bins are being supported.

The only area to experience a small drop in satisfaction is parking, with the main reason given as ‘confusing new meters’.

“While the parking result is disappointing, it is not entirely unexpected. I would expect these results to improve now that we are taking action to address the technical problems that were occurring with the roll-out of the new system,” Mr Naylor said.

PNCC will receive the full survey results in November when it will decide if most people’s needs are being met and if any recommendations need to be made to the development of the 10 Year Plan.
