Waste manager Jeremy Hirst is planning the council’s first Second-Hand Sunday which is the opportunity to clear out unwanted stuff and let your trash become another person’s treasure.

Second-Hand Sunday is like a garage sale but with no money involved, and will take place throughout Tararua.

To increase the chances of items being collected register your property with the council before November 6 and the addresses will be listed in the Tararua information centres, council offices and libraries, Mr Hirst advises. The telephone number is 06 374-4080.

The council will distribute a pamphlet with the details, including a sign to display on letterboxes.

Mr Hirst suggests that any items – toys, pot plants for example – are removed from the driveway prior to the day to avoid confusion, and that fossickers ensure that they collect only from addresses that are displaying the sign.

There are exclusions to Second-Hand Sundays. These are no food or dangerous goods, faulty electrical equipment, firearms, or rubbish.

The council in fact has had a policy authorising weekly weekend kerbside “trash” collections for about three years, but the idea has not been taken up.

Second-Hand Sunday has worked well in Central Hawke’s Bay and Mr Hirst is confident that it will in Tararua.
