MANAWATU-WHANGANUI

Sport Manawatu and local bike clubs are calling for cyclists to join them in a ride to raise awareness of cycle safety in the Manawatu.

The ride will be along the Bridle Track on Sunday November 20 at 12pm and will be a tribute to Patricia Fraser, who was tragically killed while out training for the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge in November 2010.

“All cyclists are welcome to come along - whether they are commuters, recreational or competitive cyclists,” says Sport Manawatu iMove coordinator Felicity Masters.

“Because the Bridle Track is off-road, it’s great for any cyclist, but it’s particularly good for families or younger children who want to go for a scenic bike ride without the worry of cars,” she says.

The ride will start at the Esplanade railway station and be led by a white bicycle to remember Patricia and her love of cycling. Cyclists are encouraged to bring along a picnic to enjoy after the ride.

There will also be a sausage sizzle fundraiser, a bike obstacle course for the children and a competition for the most visible cyclist and bike.

“We would like to see as many cyclists and bikes looking bright and colourful as possible,” Ms Masters says.

There is no need for cyclists to register, they just turn up on the day with a working bike and helmet.
