Police across the Wellington district have reduced the opportunities for burglars this festive season.

Wellington Police District Crime Services Manager Detective Inspector Mike Arnerich says a targeted police operation dubbed 'Operation Safe Home' has been carried out jointly this week by police districts in the lower North Island including Wellington, Central, Eastern, Bay of Plenty and Waikato.

"We have targeted known burglars and criminals in an effort to reduce the chances of residents becoming victims of burglary this festive season."

A total of 15 search warrants were executed yesterday across the District, with 30 people arrested for a variety of offences including burglary, possession of methamphetamine and cannabis for supply, cultivating cannabis, theft ex car and breach of bail.

"Police also recovered an amount of stolen property, including copper, electrical goods, cash, more than a hundred cannabis plants and dried cannabis and a quantity of methamphetamine."

Detective Inspector Arnerich says whilst Operation Safe Home isn't a new initiative, it is part of day-to-day policing.

"Police are committed to preventing crime before it occurs, hence the coordinated and targeted approach across the lower North Island. At this time of year, thieves will take any opportunity to get into your home and steal your possessions. Don't give them the chance to. Make sure you secure all windows and doors, as this can make all the difference."

He says if you're heading away for the holiday period, get to know your neighbours or have someone check on your property while you're away.
