MARLBOROUGH

Last year, visitors spent $215M in Marlborough.

That translates to $590,000 per day being spent within the region.

Marlborough’s retail sector is the single biggest beneficiary of tourism.

The tourism industry directly provides jobs for 1500 people in Marlborough.
In the year ahead, 20 cruise ships are scheduled to visit Picton; double the number of each of the previous two years.

Interest in Marlborough from the conference market continues unabated. One conference coming up next year will bring more than a thousand delegates here in September, the largest ever for our region.

A key event for the industry will be the 2012 i-SITE Conference which will bring 120 travel sellers to the region from all around the country, not only for their meeting but for an all-important four-day familiarisation tour of Marlborough’s attractions.

The promotion of Marlborough as a visitor destination aims to increase business across the region, for those directly involved in tourism and for a wide range of others, such as those servicing the hospitality and transport industries for example.

Destination Marlborough is not a Council-controlled organisation but Council does help fund it. There was a $424 return to the region for every dollar allocated to Destination Marlborough by the Council last year.

The Council's annual Residents’ Satisfaction Survey conducted mid-2011 scored 7.5 out of 10 for the way tourism is managed in Marlborough, a result that indicates a strong level of satisfaction.
