Campers urged to beware rising waters

Campers along the rivers and streams in the eastern Bay of Plenty are warned to move to higher ground, as predicted rainfall may cause localised flooding.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council's duty flood manager, Bruce Crabbe said that MetService predictions of heavy rainfall in the next few days required people to take extra care.

"We have been advised by the MetService that as much as 200mm could fall in the coastal hills and ranges in the next few days, which could have serious consequences for our river and stream systems," Mr Crabbe said.

"In the 48 hours between 3am on Friday and 3am on Sunday, it is predicted that between 100mm and 200mm of heavy rain will fall in the eastern Bay, and areas east of Whakatāne are expected to be particularly affected.

"With this type of heavy rainfall in a short period, rivers and streams will rise quickly.

"We urge visitors that are camping along riverbanks and streams to move to higher ground now.

"Farmers should consider moving stock to higher ground.

"Driving conditions may become hazardous as the weather deteriorates so we urge people to avoid unnecessary travel."

Mr Crabbe encouraged people to keep informed of changing weather conditions by logging on to the MetService website (www.metservice.com) and tuning in to local media.

"We will continue to monitor the situation closely, and manage floodgates as best we can, but people need to remain alert and take care."
