Two significant Twenty20 cricket games will be played at Hagley Park this summer, as the Canterbury Wizards compete in what is one of New Zealand’s most exciting and modern sports.

The Canterbury Wizards, Canterbury’s first-class domestic cricket team, will go head-to-head with the Wellington Firebirds at the Hagley Oval on Sunday 15 January. Entry to this match will be free for the public. One month later, on Wednesday 15 February, the Wizards will face off against the South Africa Proteas, in a ticketed warm-up match that is part of the lead-up to the first Twenty20 International in Wellington.

Christchurch City Council Recreation and Sports Unit Manager John Filsell says Twenty20 cricket is New Zealand’s most innovative sporting format. “Twenty20 cricket is similar to 50-over cricket, except each team has one innings which lasts for a maximum of 20 overs. It’s fun and it’s fast, and most games clock in at under three hours, so it’s perfect for fans of all ages.”

Deputy Mayor Ngaire Button says, “This will be the first time that Hagley Oval has been used for an international cricket game. Although AMI Stadium and QEII Park may be out of action, we are once again proving to the world that Christchurch is back on its feet.”
Grandstand seating will be installed at the Hagley Oval for the occasion.
