Remarkables Park Stud Rivals Best Antlers In Country

Remarkables Park Stud in Queenstown, renowned for consistently producing huge two year old stud sire stags, says its successful breeding programme now has it rivaling the best antlers in the country.

In 2012 its breeding programme has produced many multi-pointed yearling Spikers, including a massive 27-point Spiker sired by Craigie, crossed over a daughter of Hamberg, a German trophy stag.

Craigie, with a 601 SCI (Safari Club International) international trophy score, is famous for having produced one of the biggest sets of antlers ever seen in the world.

Remarkables Park Stud says this augers well for its Deer Stud Sale of 46 two and three year old stud sires this Thursday (January 12), with viewing starting at 11am.

While the Craigie Spikers won’t be for sale, the auction includes 11 other two and three year old sons of Craigie with massive antlers, also crossed over Remarkables Park Stud’s Eastern, German, Danish and English bloodlines.

Stud director Alastair Porter said the sale day sire stag antlers were very big, and the top two-year-old-body weights had the potential to be 240kg.

“Remarkables Park Stud has two stud breeding herds, one for dual-purpose sires for buyers wanting antlers and ‘big body’ sires, and the other a high breeding value herd for those interested only in venison production,” he said.

“Our more distant Queenstown location and relatively late stud sale date, means notwithstanding the high quality of our deer we attract a smaller group of buyers than other stud sales.

“However we have a very loyal core of Southland and Otago buyers who keep coming back every year and as a result get to buy outstanding stag sires at very reasonable prices.”
