Motorists travelling on Queens Drive are failing to notice the relocated pedestrian crossing by George Street and Council engineers are concerned for the safety of pedestrians.

Manager Engineering Services Group Russell Pearson said that Engineers had observed a number of drivers who had not anticipated pedestrians at the crossing and would not have been able to stop in time.

“We have seen a number of near misses, which is prompting us to ask motorists to be aware, look for pedestrians and be ready to stop safely.”

In response to these safety concerns, Council staff were looking at introducing extra measures to make the crossing safer while the road works were underway, he said.

It was likely that these new measures would be introduced next week.
