WORK on a $525,000 upgrade and one-way configuration of MacArthur St in Feilding’s CBD has drawn to a close.

Contractors completed the 12-week project this week, with angled parking now available on both sides of the street and traffic signposted to flow the one way from Goodbehere St to Stafford St.

Project Manager, Brent Holmes, said the work included 110m of complete pavement reconstruction work with associated new footpaths, vehicle crossings, kerb and channelling, stormwater drainage, streetscaping, clay paving, signage and roadmarking.

The renewal of about 270m of watermain and laterals and 300m of 150mm sewer main and laterals were also completed.

“Streetlighting was carried out in line with Feilding’s historic Edwardian theme,” said Mr Holmes, “with heritage lanterns on the paved kerb flares at each end of the street.”

Goodbehere St also received a tidy-up with the laying of clay pavers to the eastern footpath, to complete the missing portion from Fergusson St, as well as asphalt reseal on the carriageway.

Mr Holmes said the main contractor, Higgins Contractors, and water and drainage sub-contractors, Lundy Contracting and Tararua Roading, had enjoyed good weather and were generally ahead of schedule throughout most of the contract.

“Heavy rain in the closing stages caused some nervous moments for the paver and blocklayers,” he said.

Workers had appreciated the patience and support from local businesses that rallied around and showed a sense of humour throughout the project.

“The project team and Feilding Promotion were pro-active in liaising with the businesses and maintaining a close eye on the contractor and assisting in every way they could to keep the works on target with daily communication.”

Mr Holmes said there had been a few water pipe breakages and planned shutdowns along the way but they had been generally resolved quickly with minimal disruption.
