The contract for the new Taupō Water Treatment Plant (WTP) building on Lake Terrace was approved at the 27 March Council meeting with works expected to begin at the end of April.

The contract for the WTP building was awarded to Fulton Hogan for just over $8.1M. The contract includes construction of the treatment plant building as well as other ground stabilisations works and installation of pumps and reticulation systems.

The upgrade of the WTP is to comply with the Government’s new Drinking-water Standards that came into force on 1 July 2008. The WTP upgrade is a multi-year project with an overall budget of $25.4M, with funding having been allocated in Council’s 2010/11 Taupō Water Treatment Capital Works Budget.

Works completed so far have included installation of new water rising mains and modifications to the Tamatea Reservoir, demolition of the chlorine contact tank, various enabling works and the construction of the retaining wall at the Lake Terrace site in preparation for the new WTP building. Further work is programmed to complete the new water rising main to Titoki Reservoir and modifications to the reservoir.

The construction of the building and other site works is expected to be completed in June 2013.
