Hamilton Police, working to establish the circumstances in which a man suffered a serious neck wound in a confrontation in an inner-city bar early this morning, are interviewing people in the bar at the time.

Detective Sergeant Ricky Thompson of the Hamilton CIB said emergency services were called to the bar on Hood St around 1.30am.

"Our inquiries are still in their initial stages but at this point we understand an altercation took place on the bar's dance floor which deteriorated to the point where a glass was thrown which shattered on impact, cutting a 26-year-old man's neck.

"This man was taken to Waikato Hospital where he received several stitches before being released. Investigators are receiving good cooperation from bar management and staff and have been able to review CCTV footage of the event."

Mr Thompson said a 24-year-old man arrested in relation to throwing the glass has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and will appear in the Hamilton District Court tomorrow.
