A 16-year-old was arrested in Tauranga this morning in relation to the assault of an elderly Waikanae Beach resident, Kapiti Coast, at his home last weekend.
The person arrested has been charged with Injuring with Reckless Disregard and is due to appear today in the Tauranga Youth Court.
Detective Matt Campbell, Kapiti Police, said this follows extensive work by Kapiti Police which resulted in today’s arrest by Tauranga officers.
Police also praised the help provided by the people who went to the 87-year-old’s aid when the assault happened on Saturday afternoon, and for the information and support provided since that time.
Detective Campbell said: “The Waikanae Beach community have been an integral part of this investigation. We rely upon the public as our eyes and ears and this is a great example of the wonderful relationship we have with our community.
“Information local people have given has helped us identify the person we believe to be responsible. We thank them for this and the help they have given to the victim.”
Detective Campbell said that it is unacceptable for elderly residents to have to deal with intoxicated youth on or around their properties.
“There are many good young people around, but we know that alcohol and youth is not always a good mix and that alcohol is a key driver of crime. Police are as part of our Prevention First based model of policing working hard alongside our communities to ensure that everyone can be safe and feel safe.”
