GREYMOUTH

At approximately 1230 am this morning (28/4/12) Greymouth police attempted to stop a vehicle for a routine traffic offence.  The vehicle attempted to evade Police and drove off at speed, losing control and sliding off the road almost immediately.

The driver of the vehicle then decamped on foot in the Hill Quay area Cobden, Greymouth and is believed to have entered water in the nearby estuary.

Attending Police staff heard calls for help from the water.

A search and rescue operation was initiated to try and locate the driver.  The driver has not yet been located and the identity of the missing person is not known.

At 5.15am the search was suspended and will resume again at first light.
