Individuals, groups and organisations from throughout the Auckland region are encouraged to get their entries in for the 2012 Auckland Council Sustainable Environmental Awards.

The biennial awards acknowledge the work of those who care for the environment and natural heritage across Auckland. Entries close on 9 May.

Chair of Auckland Council’s Environment and Sustainability Forum, Wayne Walker, says that there are hundreds of community and youth groups, as well as schools, doing fantastic things all over Auckland – from Rodney in the north to Franklin in the south.

“Whether it is a local group working to improve the overall state of their community environment, or an individual leading an environmental project and, in turn, may inspire others, this work all contributes to making the Auckland region a great place to live.

“A strong commitment to environmental action and green growth is one of the six transformational shifts in the draft Auckland Plan. I encourage all those who are out there making a difference to our environment to enter these awards or to nominate other deserving individuals and groups.”

This year’s award categories are:

  • Individuals – recognising sustainable environment leadership and commitment
  • Sustainable schools – recognising commitment and practical action by schools/tertiary institutions within their campus(s) and/or local community
  • Youth – recognising commitment and practical action by people aged under 25 years
  • Sustainable communities –recognising sustainable environment achievement by a community group or family
  • Supreme – recognising the stand-out project across all categories

The Auckland Council Sustainable Environment Awards are a continuation of the former Auckland Regional Council’s awards.
