Storm Update

Fifty sandbags are still in place but flood waters appear to be receding in Murchison; 150 sandbags remain on standby. There was flooding in Fairfax and Hampden Streets, affecting one commercial property, one residential property and the Recreation Centre, but his has now cleared. It is thought to have been a flash flood related to debris gathering in a local creek and is not likely to recur unless more significant rain falls. Some minor remedial work is likely to be carried out by local contractors.

In the Murchison area, a few slips have been reported around Longford and hills in Murchison but they don’t affect roads, properties or waterways.

Further south and in the Lakes area, snow has been reported in Rappahannock, Matakitaki and Tophouse but not at a level that is causing concern.

In Tasman, one Ruby Bay resident self evacuated to family as they experienced sea water inundation on their section.

In Nelson, Isel Park is closed due to windy conditions and the risk of falling tree branches. Tahunanui Reserve back beach is also closed due to storm tide debris and risk of falling tree branches.

Around the region, winds are forecast to gust up to 130kmph throughout the day and some reports of trees being blown over are being received from all over the district.

At the moment Nelson Tasman Emergency Management are continuing to monitor the situation but are not proposing to take any further action unless the situation worsens.
