Traffic signals at six New Plymouth intersections are being upgraded this month.

The Council is replacing the quartz halogen lamps with LED lamps, which use less power and cost less to maintain, and some of the lights’ controllers will also be upgraded.

The controllers, which operate the lights’ phasing, will have their electronics replaced with modern technology.

“The traffic lights in these intersections will not be operating during the upgrades, so we ask drivers to be alert and patient,” says Manager Roading Assets Max Aves.

“The contractor will work on one light pole at a time when replacing the lights, however all traffic lights at an intersection will be down when the controllers are being worked on.

“If necessary, the contractor will have a pointsman in place to help with traffic flow.”

The six intersections are at St Aubyn/Dawson, Devon/Dawson , Powderham/Dawson , Vivian/Dawson, Devon/Liardet and Devon/Northgate.

In addition, the St Aubyn/Dawson intersection will have a phase added for traffic turning right from St Aubyn Street into Dawson Street. This will involve the installation of right-turn arrows.

“The right-turn lights have already been installed and are currently covered with plastic. When the new controller is in place we’ll be able to commission the new right turns,” says Mr Aves.

This additional provision has been made for safety reasons and to improve right-turn opportunities which have been affected since the change to the Give Way rule in March.
