Mayor says thanks to long-serving community patrol coordinator

Community Patrol Coordinator Barry Renshaw signed on for three months and stayed 12 years.

Long-serving Wainuiomata Community Patrol Coordinator, Barry Renshaw, has been thanked by the Mayor for  keeping the community safe. Barry has decided to step down from the role.

“I took on the job as a temporary coordinator for three months and 12 years later I am still here ­– I thought it was time somebody else had a go,” said Barry who was a recent recipient of a Civic Award.

Mayor Wallace said the Wainuiomata patrol was one of the first in New Zealand and had done a good job in paving the way for community patrols in New Zealand.

He said the recent success of the Community Patrol national training seminar was a tribute to local coordinators and community patrol members who had organised the event. The seminar attracted more than 300 delegates to Lower Hutt.

“The training seminar was a major boost for Lower Hutt which has a steadily reducing crime rate as a result of the patrols and their close collaboration with Police,” he said.
