The Institute of Directors (IoD) officially launched the latest edition of its flagship publication ‘The Four Pillars of Governance Best Practice’ (the Four Pillars) in Auckland on Tuesday 10 July 2012.

An essential resource for anyone in the governance community, the publication covers a wide range of topics through the lenses of the Four Pillars - determining purpose, an effective governance culture, accountability and effective compliance.

Speaking at the launch, IoD President Denham Shale said “The Four Pillars is the ultimate practical reference guide for directors and aspiring directors in New Zealand. This unique document brings together a blend of high-level principles and day-to-day practical guidance. It was designed specifically for practitioners with input from experienced senior directors.”

“There is a real focus in this document on adding value, not just on compliance. We believe that in the current environment it is more important than ever that the IoD helps to ensure a continued focus on best practice within the governance community. As the leader in this area the IoD is committed to promoting governance best practice and to lifting the standard of directors in New Zealand” Mr Shale said.

IoD Chief Executive Ralph Chivers said “We are very excited about the launch of the Four Pillars. We know that the previous version of this publication was highly valued and well utilised by our members throughout the country. This edition has been updated to make the material far more accessible as well as increasing the range and depth of subjects covered. The Four Pillars is a first-class resource for directors in New Zealand and we look forward to seeing it in boardrooms and offices throughout the country.”

New material includes: corporate governance theory, law and compliance, not-for-profit and SME boards, ethics, effective board meetings and internal compliance measures.

A copy of the Four Pillars will be distributed to all IoD members today.
