A man has been charged in connection with the death of a hunter in the South Wairarapa in April.

29-year-old Alexander Cameron McDonald, known as Cam, of Auckland was fatally shot on April 7 while hunting in the Aorangi Forest Park, near Pirinoa.

Wairarapa Detectives arrested a 54-year-old Wellington man this morning and he was charged with careless use of a firearm causing death.

The man is due to appear in Wellington District Court later today.

Wairarapa CIB Detective Senior Sergeant Sean Hansen says the charge follows a lengthy investigation by Police:

"A detailed investigation has been undertaken including examination of a difficult scene in a remote location and interviews with key witnesses.

"Today's decision follows a legal review of the file to determine the most appropriate charge which should be laid.

"I have spoken to Mr McDonald's family this morning to inform them of our decision.

"I would like to thank all those who have assisted Police with the investigation." said Mr Hansen.

No further comment will be made at this time as the matter is now before the court.
