GISBORNE

Police have named those killed in a car crash in Gisborne late Saturday night. They are Dylon Kingi (28), Holly Gunn (25) and Peter Bunyan (27) all of Gisborne. A fourth occupant of the car remains in hospital.

Acting Area Commander Maui Aben said the car first came to police notice at about 9.40 on Saturday night.

"An officer noted a vehicle driving at speed in the opposite direction to which he was travelling. He turned to follow the vehcile and activated his blue and red flashing lights to which the vehicle failed to stop.  Due to the speed of the vehicle and the manner in which it was being driven, the officer was unable to catch up to the vehicle and subsequently lost sight of it. As a result the officer conducted a search for the vehicle. He spoke to several witnesses which indicated the direction that the vehicle had travelled in. A short time later he was directed to the vehicle which had crashed.

Senior Sergeant Aben said it wasn't known why the driver fled, however police had been called to an earlier incident at an address where all the occupants of the vehicle were present.

"It is devastating for the families and I wish to convey my sincere condolences to them. "
