A report outlining alternative options for funding critical transport projects such as the additional Waitemata Harbour Crossing, City Rail Link, Penlink, rail to the Airport and the East-West Link has won the support of Auckland Council.

The agreement came at an extraordinary meeting of the council’s governing body today which the Mayor described as another important step towards an Auckland solution to the city’s transport problems.

Auckland Council will now proceed with plans to do further work around regional fuel taxes, congestion and network charging and additional car parking charges as well as departure taxes and visitor charges

“We all know how important these projects are to Auckland, we all agree that we must build them, but now is the time to have a serious think about what option or options are fair and affordable for Aucklander’s.”

Today’s endorsement by council follows a discussion document released earlier this year entitled “Getting Auckland Moving”. That document identified a $10-15 billion funding gap between Auckland’s future transport needs and what can be covered by rates and taxes.

Following additional work during the next year, a funding proposal will be presented to government recommending relevant legislation be changed. A consultative working group comprising council, government, community organisations, business and transport groups will now be set up to consider and develop the options.

“Auckland has a genuine problem requiring a multi-modal solution. Our 30 year plan recognises that taxes and rates won’t cut it, so today we begin work on funding options that will cut it,” says the Mayor.
