The Friends of the Marlborough District Library provide a very special service to people who cannot get in to the library to choose their own books; the house-bound library service, where volunteers will deliver a selection of reading material to people at home.

District Libraries Manager Glenn Webster says Marlborough is so fortunate to have this group of volunteers who provide a wonderful service to elderly or convalescing people across the district. The volunteers can be a lifeline for some house-bound readers, bringing books but also a little bit of company to people who can be quite isolated, he said.

The service coordinators visit the house-bound people to establish their reading tastes and then a selection of books is sent out regularly with a volunteer. At present, more than 40 people are getting books brought to them this way. The library’s Friends have a pool of volunteers to call upon but more are needed.

If you would like to receive the service or volunteer to become part of the house-bound service, delivering books, magazines or other library resources:

  • Leave a message for the Friends of the Library at the Blenheim Library, Ph: 03 520 7491
  • Contact Picton librarian Eleanor Bensemann, Ph: 03 520 7493.
