CANTERBURY

Ian Smallman from the SUBWAY® Pro Cycling team won back to back races in Nelson and Christchurch at the weekend.

Smallman beat former Olympic cyclists Robin Reid and Chris Nicholson to win round five of Nelson’s winter series held in the Moutere District on Saturday. He then backed up to win the final round of the Pushbikes Winter Worlds series A grade race held in Prebbleton on Sunday.

“I was stoked to win both days,” the Christchurch based cyclist said.

In Nelson Smallman was in a two person break after 40 kilometres of racing that got caught with two kilometres remaining. He broke away again taking Reid with him and then outsprinted the Athens’s Olympian to win the 70 kilometre race in one hour and 40 minutes.

Racing on Sunday he managed to avoid a crash that disrupted the event and rode away from the field with his SUBWAY® Pro Cycling team mates Paul Odlin, who finished second, and Sam Horgan, who was third. Smallman’s winning time of 56 minutes and 25 seconds was a course record.
