Some Merivale and Papanui residents may notice their tap water is temporarily discoloured.

While the water may look unpleasant, it remains safe to drink and use, says Mark Christison, Unit Manager City Water and Waste.

“Christchurch City Council advises residents to run the tap until the water looks clear again,” says Mark Christison.

There was an issue at Mays Road pump station, which was caused by work on one of our water wells in the area.

“Our staff have spent the last few hours flushing out as much discoloured water as they can, and we’re confident the mains are almost clear.

“There may be some discoloured water still in household pipes, so that’s why we suggest turning on a tap to flush this out until the water runs clear.”

The Council is monitoring the situation. Residents and property owners who still have a concern are advised to contact the Council call centre on 03 941 8999.
